Philosophy

While Dr. Griffin Coates brings over 30 years of surgical expertise, uses the most advanced techniques and state of the art equipment in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease, it is his caring manner and ability to relate to his patients that is the hallmark of this practice. Dr. Coates is concerned for the "whole" patient, not just the legs or the veins. If there are other medical issues that need to be addressed, Dr. Coates will work with your physician/s to coordinate the best care for you. Furthermore, once the heaviness and fatigue symptoms are relieved, patients are often able to exercise more and this can translate into many other health benefits.

Griffin R. Coates

MD, FACS

Dr. Coates is board certified by the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine, a Registered Vascular Technologist, a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. A graduate of Tennessee Technological University, he received his medical training at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis. After completing his general surgery residency at the Erlanger Medical Center, Dr. Coates remained in Chattanooga in private practice. He subsequently completed a cardiovascular and thoracic fellowship at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. After practicing thoracic and vascular surgery in Virginia, Dr. Coates returned to the Scenic City to open Vein Therapies of Chattanooga and bring a new and innovative procedure to those who suffer from varicose veins and venous reflux disease. The call of the Arizona desert was very strong. After 12 years in Chattanooga, Dr. Coates has relocated his vein practice to Sahuarita, AZ. At Coates Vein Clinic, PLLC, he will continue to care for his patients with unmatched experience and compassion.

Because of the many thousands of saphenous veins he saw while performing heart surgery, Dr. Coates developed an interest in venous disease. It became more personal when he developed large varicose veins himself. After researching new technology and therapeutic options which avoided the traditional vein stripping, Dr. Coates chose to have radiofrequency ablation of the saphenous veins (formerly VNUS closure/Venefit). He was amazed at the symptomatic and cosmetic improvement of his own legs. Dr. Coates recognizes that venous disease is common, largely under- diagnosed, can have significant impact on overall health, and can lead to severe complications. His goal is to educate the public about venous disease and compassionately treat his patients' medical condition.

Andi Coates

RN, BSN

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Andi graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelors degree in Nursing. She practiced nursing in the open heart surgery intensive care unit before taking on the challenge of managing a Coronary Care Unit in Alexandria, VA. Her career took a different turn when she went to work for Spacelabs Medical, Inc as a clinical specialist and later as a sales representative. It was in her role as sales representative that she visited Chattanooga for the first time and met Dr. Coates. Her interest in technology led her to work for Abiomed, Inc during the early days of the development of the AbioCor, a completely implantable artificial heart. She was able to combine her clinical skills and sales skills as she went to work with the Tucson Medical Center as their Physician Network Administrator while Dr. Coates was involved in the cardiothoracic fellowship at the University of Arizona. It was in that role that she was exposed to the business side of a medical practice. Again she was able to combine her clinical skills and business skills as the practice administrator of Vein Therapies of Chattanooga, PLLC for twelve years and now in the beautiful Sonoran Desert at Coates Vein Clinic, pllc.
